Thanksgiving is an American celebration held on the 4th Thursday of November to express gratitude for what they have such as family, friends, work, health etc.
The origin of Thanksgiving dates back to 1620 : hundreds of English people left England because they suffered from religious oppression.
They left from Plymouth, southwest of London, with the ship Mayflower. Only half of them arrived in America because of the very cold winter. The survivors of the Mayflower landed in Massachusetts where they founded the city of Plymouth. They are called “Pilgrim Fathers“.
The American Indians gave them food and in the spring taught them to grow vegetables and plants, to fish and to hunt. The following fall, in 1621, the Pilgrim Fathers had enough food to feed their entire people. To thank the Indians for their help and to show their thankfulness, they held a very large dinner that lasted three days. This was the first Thanksgiving Day.
Every year, on the same date since 1621, the American people celebrate Thanksgiving in memory of this event.
Thanksgiving is a time of sharing, around lots of food with the famous Thanksgiving turkey 🦃 and stuffing, but also with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce. For dessert it’s apple pie and pumpkin pie 🥧.
Thanksgiving can be considered more important than Christmas in the USA. Thanksgiving parades are organized and broadcast on television.
